About ROT Ciphers & Simple Substitutions

ROT (Rotate) ciphers are simple substitution ciphers where each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. These ciphers provide no real security but are widely used for obscuring spoilers, hiding answers to puzzles, or as a fundamental exercise in learning cryptography.

ROT13: The Internet Standard

ROT13 is the most famous variant, shifting the alphabet by 13 places. Because there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, applying ROT13 twice restores the original text, making it its own inverse. It is the de facto standard for obfuscating text in online forums and mailing lists.

Extended ROT Variants

Our tool supports ROT5 (for digits), ROT18 (a combination of ROT13 and ROT5), and ROT47. ROT47 uses a larger set of characters from the ASCII table (including numbers and symbols), providing a more comprehensive scrambling of your data.
